On November 1st, 2007, 90-year old Atoo of the Akha hill tribe died at Doi Tung, Thailand. Akha funeral rites vary according to the status of the deceased, and given Atoo's advanced age and his several heirs and descendants, his funeral was an all-out, week long affair involving several hundred people and numerous ceremonies. I was lucky to be invited to photograph and participate in such a significant ritual, and I took over 1,300 photos over the course of six days. In these galleries you will find my best shots of An Akha Funeral... |
