My first thought upon seeing this game was... piñata. Whereas in the Mexican version of the piñata, the treats are hung from a tree, here in the Akha version the prizes are placed on top of a used cooking oil can. The contestant is blindfolded and handed a stick, and he or she must then guess the correct amount of steps and the direction. The lucky person who takes a swing and hits the can wins the prizes; the unlucky person is several steps in the wrong direction or far short of the mark. The prizes for this round included some little candies, and one generous adult even placed five baht (about 14 US cents) on the can as an extra incentive. This game is harder than it looks, as it took about eight contestants to finally end the round.
This simple suspense drew a huge crowd and children and adults from the village, and impressed me as a considerable community event. |
