On X-mas eve night and X-mas night, the young people of the village gather for music and dancing. The instruments include a drum, hand cymbals, and a metal plate with a raised boss in the middle, hanging from a stick, that is struck with another stick. Each instrument is passed from person to person to create the music.
Below, there is a simple dance around a board laid out on the floor, and participants weild these sticks, striking the board as another instrument to make music. This dancing and music will continue long into the night. In what seemed like hours after I had retired to my mattress, I could still hear the music made by these merrymakers. I'm not sure if they go long into the night like this all the time, but they could have been doing it to stay warm. Due to a cold front coming from China, this was one of the coldest winters on record. Up here in the mountains of northern Thailand, the temperature can drop below freezing. People do die from either freezing to death or burning to death because they have lighted fires in their wood houses. No one in this village died this year, but it was pretty close--even though I lived in cold northern Japan for several years, I wasn't quite prepared for this cold. |
