And this is one of the activities that draws so many people for Loy Krathong--setting afloat krathongs, or floats, in the river. Made of banana stems and leaves, and including a candle, incense, and flowers, these floats send away bad luck. The lighting of the candle also is a symbol of religious devotion.
People watch closely as they set free their krathongs, as the light of the candle is an omen for the future. If it stays lit, one's transgressions are forgiven, while a quickly snuffed flame is not a good sign. Young lovers, as seen at right, also look for portent, as two floats sent away together that stay together is a good sign for the relationship. Many people see the irony in thanking the river goddess by stuffing the waters full of floats that are mostly biodegradable, but still include items that may not be beneficial for aquatic life. And in the days following Loy Krathong, there will be piles of krathongs littering the banks of the river. However, at least on the night of Loy Krathong, the floats and candles making their way down river are a sight to see. |
