The colivă is a traditional funeral pudding with pre-Christian, pagan origins that symbolizes the passing from life to death. It is made from boiled wheat kernels sweetened with sugar or honey, with walnuts, candies, and crumbled sweet crackers. The cycle of the wheat is metaphorical for the cycle of life, death, and resurrection. Family members prepare the colivă, which is made almost exclusively for liturgies involving death.
