This billboard is advertising a medicinal body lotion made by a famous and longlasting Shanghai company. Bicyclists passing by are exhorted to purchase the "Six Magic Ingredients" product.
As in the rest of the world, branding is very important. Most of these billboards are advertising Chinese products, rather than Western products aimed at the Chinese market. Western goods were rather hard to find in Kunming, though one could find Double Mint chewing gum, Nestle's Kit-Kat chocolate bars, Marlboro cigarettes and of course the ubiquitous Coca-Cola. However, with China soon to be joining the World Trade Organization this dearth of Western products is sure to change. For the moment though, Chinese companies seem to have the edge in branding and certainly they dominate the advertising scene. |
