I travelled forth from my hotel to this large square, armed with a tripod, for a few "bright lights" pics. Kunming is a city of more than three million people and has its share of tall buildings, including hotels such as the Holiday Inn, modern office buildings and this one, the "Kunming Municipal Worker's Club."
The government rents out space in this building, often for music, singing and dancing lessons. I was told by a resident of Kunming that there exists a sense of fear and uncertainty for the future. Yet in the face of this, and perhaps because of it, they seek to fill their time by taking classes like those offered here. Maybe another result of uncertainty for the future: this building has become a favorite spot for leaping to one's death, and suicides are reported regularly in the local newspapers. |
