These novice monks will also celebrate Loy Krathong, with one of the more dramatic methods--the fiery khom loy. This floating lantern, made of mulberry paper and bamboo strips, can be set aloft by anyone, not just monks, and these boys are joining in the fun. The air beneath the khom loy is heated using a torch until it is ready to float, and then at the last moment a trail of firecrackers are lit beneath it. It joins other khom loys rising over the city with flame and explosions seemingly pushing it higher.

Not just a fireworks show, these khom loys carry away a year's worth of bad luck--for those that set them free. Those that wake in the morning to find a fallen khom loy in the garden are bound for a bad spell of fortunes.

It may also be bad luck for you if you happen to be flying into Chiang Mai during Loy Krathong. The international airport has had to divert and cancel flights due to these floating lanterns, though no flights have been lost--yet.
