The Sapporo Ice Festival will attract more than a million visitors to this city of the north, but I will be long gone by then. Prices are cheaper in the run up to the festival, so I get to see the actual creation of the sculptures if not the finished products.
Above, one of the sculptures, a mouth with antennae, seems to have turned on one of its creators. At right, it is obvious that these sculptures, made either from packed snow or ice, are going to be very, very big, necesitating the use of a back hoe to position the snow.
